This may be the most pointless and bizarre beef in hip hop ever. Peep Canibus statement below.

“Currently, new artists such as J Cole have continuously mentioned me as their favorite artist, shouted me out in articles, magazine/online interviews, and even gone as far as starting off show sets by playing some of my earlier material to warm up the audience and give off the impression that he is real hip hop and loves real lyricism. Cole might say he does this to pay homage, but in reality, by him playing my older material owned by my former label dating back to 1998, subsequently overlooking my current works and contributions which directly benefit me now, he is treating me less like an artist that has, and continues to contribute, influence, and inspire an even younger generation of MC’s coming up, and more like an artist that has physically passed on already(i.e. Tupac, B.I.G., Big L, Heavy D, Eyeda): you get the point I’m trying to make. I can’t help but to think that he is not nearly as sincere or genuine as he would like real hip hop heads to think he is because he speaks about me like I am dead. What he is doing is underhanded and disingenuous and whether it is his idea or not, I don’t agree with his tactic and I have something to say about it. Some might look to label me as an older head picking on a younger head who claims to have been influenced by me, but I refuse to let anyone including him stand on what we built, and pompously extract only the parts that suit them and their undermining intentions under the guise of “paying homage”. I’m sick of it. That’s fake, fraudulent, and misrepresents mine and others contributions, and significance to hip-hop music. After watching many many interviews of Clone, I mean Cole “pay homage”, I decided to pay some homage to him myself because I am still alive and well and ready to throw down for Hip Hop.”

And just as fast as this weird shit started, he issued a seemingly heartfelt apology. Very big of him to do that.

CHICAGO – While many Hip Hop fans and most Americans may be unfamiliar with the United Kingdom’s brand new Prime Minister, David Cameron, Grammy Award winner Rhymefest can trace his history with the Conservative British leader back to a controversial 2006 meeting in London.

After Cameron complained that rap music “encourages people to carry guns and knives,” Rhymefest wrote to the English politician. From there, Cameron arranged to hear Rhymefest’s point of view over a cup of tea at the Commons.

Despite the Labour Party’s Stephen Pound labeling the meeting “a step too far” in striving to gain the youth vote, David Cameron expressed that meeting with Rhymefest was “very positive.” The two agreed about the existence of violence in rap, while disagreeing on some of the motives behind the lyrics. Overall, the sit-down was productive, as Rhymefest described “discussion is revolution. Discussion is what will solve the problems of poverty and violence.”

Rhymefest hopes to continue the discussion with David Cameron as he takes his new position as the U.K.’s newly appointed Prime Minister. With Rhymefest’s sophomore album, El Che, seeing a June 8th release date, the Chicago emcee plans to send Cameron a copy of the 16 track effort to listen to in his office.

Though Cameron has suddenly inherited great responsibilities, Rhymefest is confident that the two shall meet again to discuss Hip Hop over tea.

Not really but R&B legend GLADYS KNIGHT is NOT a fan of rap music . . . but she thinks it’s been detrimental to African American culture.

–Gladys tells BlackNews.com, quote, “[Rap has] been bad, in my opinion, as far as the quality of the music and the stories that they tell. It’s one thing to be raw about your history, but they took it to another level and it became vulgar.

–”It definitely has not elevated us as African-Americans, because we show disrespect for our partners, men and women. I believe we have lowered our self-esteem with these performances and presentations.”

We can’t really blame Gladys for her views on hip hop.  Her only encounters with the music and culture are probably only what she hears on the radio and what she sees on t.v. . Perhaps she has never seen or heard Mos Def perform live, attended a Roots Show or listened to Kev Brown. Is this her fault? Nah, it’s the medias fault! It’s radios fault! It’s OUR fault! Our fault for “LOVING” hip hop and not financially supporting the ones who make it.  The bottom line is our music and culture is often represented wrong. In a game of Black Jack, bad cards are balanced out by the good cards. WE KEEP USING 3′S! LETS DO BETTER!!!!

Since its humble beginnings in the 1970s, Hip-Hop has had spiritual connections to established religious groups like Islam and Christianity.

However, legend Doug E. Fresh has emerged as the first Hip-Hop artist to publicly embrace the controversial faith known as Scientology.

Fresh confirmed the news via an interview with Essence Magazine, and stated he has been practicing the faith for the last 8 years after being introduced to it through former girlfriend and Hot 97 radio personality Miss Jones.

The faith was founded in the 1950s by L. Ron Hubbard, and uses a mythology centered on the belief that all humans are immortal through a life force/source known as theta.

Through the religion’s teachings, followers are taught to reach spiritual enlightenment by becoming one with their soul, known as the thetan.

Fresh, who has been an ambassador for Hip-Hop culture for over 25 years and has also incorporated religious themes in his music.

According to Fresh, he is the first Hip-Hop artist to join the religious movement.

“I am the first Hip-Hop artist to do it,” explained to Essence Magazine. “Isaac Hayes was a former coworker of Miss Jones and he told her about it,” said Doug E. Fresh. “I went with her to one of the classes. Miss Jones stopped going but I continued. I found it fascinating. It changed how I thought. I’ve learned how to look at things and not judge them but respect them and use it in a way that people understand that I respect them, show them love and respect their reality.”

Scientology is the object of much media scorn due to reports of brainwashing and a rejection of modern science for illness treatment.

But Doug E. Fresh is hopeful that he can educate those who’ve never studied the faith for themselves.

“Scientology is not a White religion. It is not just for White people,” Fresh told Essence. “Scientology is not written with disrespect toward God. It doesn’t worship something that is evil. It is scientific, mathematical, and spiritual. The Black community has to check it out and see what’s there. I’m not saying it’s for everyone, but you have to take a look. You may be amazed at what you get.”

Comedian Mike Epps has been tapped to host this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards which will take place next month in Atlanta, Georgia.

The popular “Bad Boys of Comedy” host will take on a prime time slot when the annual show airs next month.
The BET Hip Hop Awards 09 returns to primetime this fall with actor/comedian Mike Epps as the new host.

Taping on Saturday, October 10 at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta, this exciting annual special will once again celebrate the biggest names in the game, on the mic and in the community. With this year’s crowning tagline “And We Don’t Stop…,” BET plans to relive it all again, plus more.

Premiering on the network on Tuesday, October 27 at 8:00 p.m., additional performers, nominees and show talent will be announced later next month.

BET Networks President of Music and Programming Stephen Hill has also confirmed Epp as this year’s host.
“We are VERY happy to be coming back to ‘The A’ for the fourth go at the BET Hip-Hop Awards,” said Stephen Hill, President of Music and Programming, BET Networks.

“We embrace the opportunity to amplify all aspects of the hip-hop culture; the music, the dance, the sense of community and as we have before, we expect to do so with excitement…and with my man Mike Epps on board as our new host, we’ll do it with reckless abandon. And we don’t Stop.”
