Definitely not like the original. I can understand putting new things/ideas in the movie but this was almost a completely different movie.
The musical performances was very good. Hats off to Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks, Cee-Lo Green, and the whole crew. Everybody wants to know was it better than “DreamGirls”…….No it wasn’t. Comparing Sparkle to DreamGirls is like comparing “The Karate Kid” with Ralph Macchio to the “The Karate Kid” with Jaden Smith. Uhhh no comparison people. Sparkle lacked audience affection. You want us to really feel this scene with people crying but you never pulled us in with the dialogue and their relationship.
Now if you haven’t seen the original, then the movie would probably do you just. How do you expect one to look at Mike Epps in a serious role when he is acting as a comedian in the movie? So of course the crowd was laughing at what was supposed to be serious scenes.
Another problem was that the movie did not stay constant with time. I can rip Sparkle a new one with this but I will spare you details and let you watch the movie yourself. If you take a story that has been overly told, you have to go above and beyond creativity to make one feel they got their monies worth. I really dislike being the bearer of bad news but Sparkle will only be remembered as Whitney’s last film.   If you don’t go see it for anything else………..go see it for Whitney.
