Album: Malice In Wonderland

Now reveling in his Doggfather persona, a far way from the threat that saw a UK tabloid devote it’s front page a plea to ‘Ban this evil bastard’, Snoop D-oh-double-gee returns with his tenth album in sixteen years. Not a bad work rate for music’s most famous stoner (apologies to Willie Nelson).

The expected roll call of all-star producers are on team, including Teddy Riley, Pharrell and Lil Jon, while lead single ‘Gangsta Luv’ is co-produced by Tricky with The Dream. As is the usual major league hip hop album set up a plethora of guest stars appear, leaning towards R’n’B singers this time out, R Kelly, Brandy, Jazmine Sullivan and The Dream, rather than his fellow rappers, just Soulja Boy fulfilling that quota.

The title ‘Malice N Wonderland’ is reflected in the album’s structure, the first half (Malice) keeping things gritty before a turn to party mode for the second half (Wonderland). Still a terrible title but at least it makes some sense. The vibe throughout keeps with his laidback, West coast pedigree with the producers clearly working around Snoop’s substantial persona rather than trying to push in any new directions. Buy hey, if it ain’t broken..ya’ll know the rest. Salute
