Recently-revitalized Death Row Records is getting into movie production with an independent film about a basketball star who returns to his inner-city neighborhood.
Death Row was recently saved from bankruptcy by Toronto, Canada-based WIDE Awake Entertainment Group.
CEO Lara Lavi is launching the new Death Row Films division with an indie flick called Sons 2 the Grave which tells the cautionary tale of a basketball phenom whose NBA dreams are shattered after he gets shot.
Lara Lavi said, “This film embodies what we’re trying to do with Death Row, to tell human stories that don’t always have happy endings, and that allow us to learn from violence and disenfranchised lives, but not glorify it.
We’re looking at film properties that relate to Boyz in the Hood-type stories, and to power the films with Death Row music.”
Production on Sons 2 the Grave will begin soon.
